How to use the Word Counter

  1. Paste or type your text into the box. The counts update automatically as you type or paste.
  2. Read the stats: Words (space-separated), Characters (letters and symbols, including spaces), Sentences (split by periods and similar), and Paragraphs (split by blank lines).
  3. Use it for essays, social posts, or any text where you need a word count or character count. No data is sent to a server; everything is counted in your browser.

How the counts are calculated

Knowing exactly what each number means helps you compare results with other tools, your word processor, or a submission form that has its own limit.

  • Words: the text is split wherever there is whitespace (spaces, tabs, or line breaks). A hyphenated term such as "well-known" or an email address counts as one word, because it has no space inside it.
  • Characters: every character in the box is counted, including letters, digits, punctuation, spaces, and line breaks. This is the number most platforms use for their character limits.
  • Sentences: a sentence is counted each time a run of text ends with a period, question mark, or exclamation mark. Abbreviations like "e.g." and decimals like "3.14" contain periods, so text full of them can show a slightly higher sentence count than you would count by hand.
  • Paragraphs: a paragraph is a block of text separated from the next by at least one blank line. Pressing Enter once only starts a new line, so leave an empty line between blocks to have them counted separately.

Common length limits worth checking

Many places you write for restrict length. These are typical limits at the time of writing; platforms change them, so confirm on the platform itself before publishing.

  • Posts on X (formerly Twitter): 280 characters for a standard post.
  • Text messages (SMS): a single message is 160 characters in the standard alphabet; longer messages are split into several parts.
  • Search result title and description: titles are usually shown up to about 60 characters and descriptions up to about 155 to 160 characters before being cut off.
  • Instagram captions: up to 2,200 characters.
  • LinkedIn posts: up to 3,000 characters.
  • Essays and assignments: usually set as a word range, for example 500 to 1,000 words, so the Words count is the one to watch.

Estimating reading and speaking time

You can turn a word count into a rough time estimate. Most adults read silently at around 200 to 250 words per minute, so a 1,000-word article takes about four to five minutes to read. Speaking is slower: a comfortable presentation pace is roughly 130 to 160 words per minute, so a five-minute talk is about 650 to 800 words. These are averages, and technical or unfamiliar material takes longer to read.

Tips for tightening your writing

  • Check the word count after each editing pass. Cutting 10 percent usually removes filler such as "very", "really", and "in order to" without losing meaning.
  • Keep sentences short. If a sentence runs past 25 or 30 words, consider splitting it in two.
  • Use blank lines between ideas. Shorter paragraphs are easier to scan on a phone screen.
  • For form fields with a character limit, test the final text here first so it is not silently cut off when you submit.

Frequently asked questions

Does the character count include spaces?
Yes. Spaces, punctuation, and line breaks are all included in the character total.
Is my text saved or uploaded anywhere?
No. The counting happens in your browser as you type, and the text is not sent to a server.
Why is my count different from Microsoft Word or Google Docs?
Word processors apply their own rules for things like hyphens, dashes, and footnotes. This tool uses a simple, predictable rule: a word is anything separated by whitespace.
Is there a limit on how much text I can paste?
There is no fixed limit, but very long documents may feel slower depending on your device.
