How to use the Expense Splitter

  1. Enter a Group name (e.g. “Trip to Goa” or “Office lunch”) and choose the Currency.
  2. Add people with Add person; you can have up to 20. Use the fields to type each name; use Update to save changes or Remove to delete. You need at least one person.
  3. Click Create group. You are taken to the expense page with a unique link. Share that link with everyone in the group so they can open the same group and add or view expenses.
  4. On the expense page, add each expense: choose who paid, enter the amount, and select who the expense is for (default is everyone). Click Calculate to see who owes whom. Use the share link so everyone sees the same data.

Expense Splitter stores the group and expenses on the server so one link stays in sync for everyone. Groups are automatically removed after 30 days of inactivity. No signup is required.

Practical tips from common group-split situations

Trips with mixed spending: One person books hotel, another pays for fuel, another covers meals. Add each expense with the exact payer and choose everyone who benefited. The result is usually cleaner than manually trying to settle line by line in chat.

Office lunch or team snacks: If one person pays for all and everyone consumed it, keep the expense “for all” (default). If only a few people joined, select only those names so non-participants are not charged.

Roommates and shared household bills: Keep separate groups by month (for example, “Flat - Apr 2026”) so history is easier to review and old links can expire naturally.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Duplicate names: Use distinct names like “Vignesh” and “Vignesh (Office)” if needed.
  • Wrong payer selected: If calculations look odd, first check the “paid by” person for each expense.
  • Mixed currency in one group: Keep one currency per group. Create a separate group if part of the trip used another currency.
  • Sharing the wrong link version: Always copy the final group URL after creation; that link is the source of truth for the whole group.

Expense Splitter FAQ

Do people need an account to view a group?
No. Anyone with the group link can open the same data. That is why you should share the link only with intended participants.
Can I use this for unequal splits?
Yes. Choose exactly which people an expense was for. If only two people shared a meal in a five-person group, select only those two.
What happens if we stop using a group?
Groups are cleaned up automatically after inactivity. If you need a long-term record, copy the final settlement summary before the trip closes.
